James W. Scott was born in Wisconsin and was raised in Galena (Ill.). He was best known as the publisher and business manager of the Chicago Times-Herald and the Chicago Evening Post. He was a patron of the arts and was instrumental in ensuring that the World's Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago. His sudden death from apoplexy shocked the Chicago community in April 1895.
